4 Ways I'm Focusing On My Wellness In The New Year

Ah, the start of a new year. It’s always a time where we seem to want to double down on what we want to accomplish in the coming year. We focus a lot here at GenTwenty on goals over resolutions. We like micro goals, short term goals, long term goals… you might just say we’re obsessed with them. And I don’t think it’s a bad thing to be focused on what you want to achieve, whether it’s in a day, week, month, year or lifetime. I think it’s important to be reasonable about what you want to achieve. To not set too many goals. To go about them in a SMART and methodic way. You can truly achieve anything you set your mind to.

But the thing about “setting your mind” is that you almost need to set it and forget it. And what I mean by that is to decide on your goals and then make the steps to achieving them so much part of your life that you don’t even think about those daily actions and you’re getting to your goals one step at a time. 

I’ll show you what I mean below as I dig deeper into the four ways I’m focusing on my health in the new year.

4 Ways I’m Focusing On My Wellness In The New Year

1. I’m biking 15 minutes everyday in January.

Yup, just me and my bike for 15 minutes a day. I took completely off on my son’s birthday because for one, I wanted to celebrate and two, I needed a rest day. I also incorporated another day more recently for a long stretch routine. However, we’re halfway through the month now and I’ve done 15 workouts. And I’m damn proud of that!

It’s not about the particular exercise for me, it’s about setting my mind to think it’s weird if I don’t incorporate movement into my day.

I want it to feel strange if I didn’t go on a bike ride or do a walk. And the way I’m doing that is committing to 15 minutes on my bike everyday. Some days I do HIIT workouts or climb rides and other days it’s about recovery or warm-up ride. I fit it in wherever I can. And even as mom of two who works from home, I’ve been able to make it happen which helps me strengthen my brain to say, “hey you can do this, you can find time for this, and you can prioritize this.”

2. I’m eating better.

3. I’m writing fiction.

My career is writing. I love writing. It’s how I express my thoughts and feelings and get to know myself better. It’s how I share my stories and experiences with the world. And all of that writing is non-fiction. This year I decided to work towards a different goal and use my skills differently.

So I’m writing fiction. I’m working on a novel just for fun. And I even hired my friend Marina as my Accountability Coach to keep me on target with my goal. Having paid for her services is keeping my skin in the game and keeping me working towards my goal.

This isn’t so much about writing as it is about CREATIVITY. I think it’s so important to be creative and express creativity. Bring something from within you to outside of you. Whatever your medium might be, use your brain, your mind, your hands, and express yourself.

Art is therapy. It’s good for your brain, it reduces your stress levels, it helps you relax and sleep better. I don’t think you’ll ever regret being creative.

4. I’m making non-toxic swaps all throughout my life.

I’ve been writing posts on non-toxic swaps for the past six months or so. It’s become more and more important to me to use less chemicals in my home and to expose my family to less chemicals. And this includes everything from skincare and facial moisturizer to your dinnerware to your cookware to the plants in your home and the candles you burn. It all matters and it all makes a difference.

If you’re looking to start switching to truly non-toxic products (and not get distracted by greenwashing – I’ve been there), there are a few different ways you can start.

These are my suggestions:

  • Start with the products you put directly on your skin
  • Swap out what you cook with and eat with (Caraway was my first investment)
  • Change for the littlest members of your family first

The older I get, the more I understand how much wellness matters. Not just what you eat and how you exercise but what you do. How you rest. What you surround yourself with.
