Want to celebrate national creativity day? Whether you feel creative or not you can celebrate with any of these activities on May 30th!
When was the last time you expressed your creativity? Is it something that you try to do regularly, or was the last time you put pencil to sketchpad back in grade school art class?
What about the last time you noticed all of the creative work around you? That mural you drive past everyday, the movie you watched last night, that photograph of the mountains hanging in your office, those are all examples of creative work.
May 30th is National Creativity Day! If it’s been a while since you’ve done or appreciated anything creative, this is the perfect day to get back to it. If you are not a stranger to creating, this is a day to make your next best piece of art, or whatever you create. Better yet, it’s a great day to show off your work. You may just inspire others to do the same.
History of National Creativity Day & Why It’s Important
National Creativity Day was started by Hal Croasmun and ScreenwritingU in 2018. This is a day to celebrate all of the different creative outlets and encourage people to pursue them. Some of these outlets include writing, filmmaking, painting, singing, photography, and playing music, just to name a few.
There is a misconception about creativity that you either “have it or you don’t.” The truth is, creativity is a skill. Like any other skill it can be practiced and you can get better and better.
This holiday helps those that believe they are not creative break out of their comfort zone. If you’re still unsure how to participate in National Creativity Day, I have another option for you.
I’m Not Creative, So How Can I Celebrate National Creativity Day?
If you still don’t feel comfortable expressing your creativity, or maybe you just don’t want to, which is completely fine, there are other ways to celebrate this day. You can do that by being an observer and encourager to other people.
Whether that’s your favorite artist, a writer from your hometown, or even your friends and family that enjoy being creative, there are many people to celebrate. With that being said, in this next section I’m sharing some ideas for the holiday.
20 Ways To Celebrate National Creativity Day
These activities I’m about to share are for anyone and everyone. Creativity is not all about being perfect, it’s about having fun. I think that is what having a day like National Creativity Day is for.
It reminds us that anyone can express their creativity, no matter their skill level. Don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone and have fun. Here are some ways to do that.
Have A Craft Day:
When I think of a day to celebrate creativity I think of a day spent doing a bunch of fun crafts. You can find so many fun activities at any skill level on Pinterest.
Support A Creator:
By supporting a creator you are letting them know how much you value their work. Whether it’s something small like a follow on Instagram, or something bigger, like buying a piece of merchandise from an Etsy seller, each one makes a difference. This is a great activity to do if you aren’t wanting to create anything.
Go To A Museum:
If you enjoy looking at art, and other creative mediums, going to a museum is a perfect way to celebrate on National Creativity Day.
Do Some Creative Writing:
All of the writers reading this post will enjoy this activity. If you haven’t done any writing lately, consider changing that on National Creativity Day.
Buy Some Wall Art To Decorate Your House:
Here is another idea for those that appreciate art, but don’t identify themselves as a creative individual. Go looking for your next great wall art piece.
Write A Blog Post:
If you are a blogger this holiday is a great day to do some writing. Or, maybe you haven’t started a blog yet but it’s been on your vision board? If that’s the case it’s time to make that vision a reality.
Host A Paint & Sip Night, Or Go To One:
These have always looked so fun! Get a group of friends and have a girls’ night out, or in if you are hosting. This could also make a fun date night.
Take An Art Class:
If you have an arts center or recreational department in your town, see what art classes they offer and sign up for the one that interests you the most. You could also look for a free art class on YouTube and get access to learning something new while at home.
Plan A Photoshoot:
Random photoshoots are so fun! Whether you are in front of the camera, or behind it, don’t forget to try new things when you are exploring your creativity through poses or photos.
Let Out Your Inner Child:
If you would describe yourself as a kid at heart, this would be a perfect day to explore that through creative methods. Dance around like no one is watching and coloring are two that come to my mind first. You can find more ideas in our editor-in-chief Nicole’s book The Kidult Handbook.
Make A Playlist:
Music lovers will love this idea. When I say make a playlist I don’t mean a typical one. Make it a challenge. Playlist challenges are a great way to discover new music and create some cool playlists.
Play With Makeup:
If you enjoy experimenting with makeup, National Creativity Day is a great day to try out new looks.
Go To A Concert:
This is another activity that music lovers will enjoy. Look up one of your favorite artists that are on tour, or go to a local concert near you.
Drive/Walk Around To See The Murals In Your City:
I love seeing murals on the side of buildings. You can tell that so much love and hard work goes into making one of those. On National Creativity Day around to see all the different murals around you.
Go On A Photo Walk:
Take some time out of your day to go on a walk and get caught up in nature. Nature photography is soothing to me, and I bet if you enjoy photography you feel the same way.
Watch A Movie, Pay Attention To The Small Details:
When’s the last time you thought about the creation process while watching a movie? If it’s been a while, this would be the perfect time to do that. I recommend watching a Pixar movie. The amount of beautiful creations they have made through their movies are unmatched.
Play With Paint:
There are many options you could do for this activity. You could paint a canvas, or even channel Princess Diaries and pop some balloons filled with paint. Whatever you feel called to do more.
Go To A Show:
This can be any type of show; broadway, a dance recital, etc… What type of show will you be going to see?
Listen To Street Performers:
I haven’t gotten to see many of these, but I feel like they bring a more lively aspect to the cities they perform in. If you see any street performers on National Creativity Day stop by and give them a listen.
Create A Card For A Friend:
This last activity can be good for both you and a friend. Design your very own card to send out to a friend just because. They will appreciate the thought.
